How to put together a chocolate gift basket

Start with something they already love. A dark chocolate person might be happiest with a few bars to compare. Someone who orders hot chocolate in every season would probably like a bag for their kitchen. Give yourself room for a surprise, too.
Three to five chocolate items make a useful starting point for a gift basket. Choose the chocolate first, then find a basket, reusable box or bowl that fits it.
Choose flavors they'll want to open

Check ingredients before you build
Ask about food allergies and dietary needs before buying. Keep the original packaging and ingredient labels with every item. A cacao percentage or a dark chocolate label won't tell you everything about milk, nuts or shared equipment; read the current product's ingredient and allergen information.

Add something personal
Write the note yourself. Tell them why you chose the gift, or which chocolate you hope they'll try first. A ribbon in their favorite color or a small keepsake from a shared trip can be enough decoration.
Coffee, tea or dried fruit can sit nicely beside chocolate. If you add nuts or wine, check that the recipient wants them. Keep everything in its own sealed packaging so the labels stay readable and strong aromas don't mingle.
Pack it for the handoff
Put heavier items at the bottom or back, with paper cushioning between them. Keep the bonbon box flat and face the labels forward. A basket that looks lovely on a table still needs a sturdy outer box if you're sending it through the mail.
